Here are some wise words from Doctor Crabtree:
” First, pursue a field that you are passionate about. Sounds cliché, but too many people commit a lifetime of work to something that they don’t truly love for the wrong reasons. Some people think medicine is the way to go because of the financial benefits. Most of the time, even for those doing very well financially in medicine, this results in an unhappy and unsatisfied life down the road. You HAVE to love what you are doing, or you will be miserable with your career regardless of how much you are making.
Second, and this is tough because I didn’t always practice what I preach. Don’t live your young life trying to fill a resume full of different activities. I think people recognize when young students are trying to simply check off boxes based on what they think they should be doing. The best resumes I have seen are when people find something that they are deeply committed to whether that be basic science research, or clinical research, or volunteer or charity work. A strong commitment to a few things is better than a cursory experience in a bunch of activities. “
